Native Woody Plants Diversity and Density under Eucalyptus camaldulensis Plantation, in Gibie Valley, South Western Ethiopia
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of E. camaldulensis plantation established in a semi-arid area on native woody plants diversity and density. Nested quadrant plot design, having an area of 15 m × 15 m used to collect data. Totally, 37 species at the plantation and 30 species at the native woodland, belonging to 24 families, identified. Species diversity (H′) was 1.57 at the plantation and 2.09 at the woodland forest. As for density of understory woody plants (height ≥ 1 m) the plantation forest harbored 6, 604 stems/ha while the native woodland had 7, 347 stems/ha. Seedling density (height < 1 m) at the native woodland and at the plantation there were 11,436 stems/ha and 8,865 stems/ha, respectively. The similarity of woody species composition between the woodland forest and the plantation was low. However, in terms of autochthonous tree seed bank availability, authentic hypothesis seems to prove that if clear-cut patches replanted by introduced species that do not exceed 5 ha, they still significantly favour original forest regeneration and composition in a semi-arid area and surprisingly favors the regeneration of Dodonaea angustifolia and other native species important for soil conservation, timber, bee forage and medicinal use.

2009/8/28
In order to evaluate the role of frugivorous birds in the dispersal of broad-leaved tree seeds in a plantation of Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica D. Don, we monitored seed rain with 120 seed trap...
Spatial Distribution of Soil Water Repellency in a Japanese Cypress Plantation and an Adjacent Deciduous Broad-leaved Forest
deciduous broad-leaved forest forest soil Japanese cypress plantation spatial distribution water repellency
2009/8/28
Water repellency is recognized as an important soil property that can affect the flow and storage of water in forest soils at the slope scale, since it causes overland flow or preferential infiltratio...
Mitigating Effects of Broadleaved Forest Fragmentation on Birds:Proposal of Plantation Matrix Management
habitat loss landscape ecology patch area stand composition stand structure
2009/8/27
I reviewed the effects on forest birds of replacing broadleaved forests at the patch and landscape levels, with emphasis on replacement by plantations. I proposed methods mitigating such effects. Redu...
The Effects of Tree Height and Growth on the Density of Feeding Sites of the Cypress Bark Moth Epinotia granitalis (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in a Young Japanese Red Cedar Plantation
annual growth Cryptomeria japonica Epinotia granitalis larval feeding site tree size
2009/8/27
The author examined the effects of tree height and growth on the density of larval feeding sites of the cypress bark moth Epinotia granitalis, which causes wood discoloration in conifer plantations in...
Relationship between Stem Density and Interception Ratio for Coniferous Plantation Forests in Japan
conifer evapotranspiration forest management interception evaporation plantation stem density
2009/8/27
Summarizing 12 studies examining interception evaporation from coniferous plantation forests in Japan, we found a positive correlation between stem density and interception ratio. Regressing the corre...
The Relationship between Slope Position and Stand Structure of an Old Chamaecyparis obtusa Plantation in Northern Kyoto Prefecture,Japan
L-function old-aged forest plantation slope thinning
2009/8/24
We analyzed the size and spatial distribution of trees in relation to slope position in a 90-year-old Chamaecyparis obtusa plantation, which has never been thinned. The study plot was on a steep slope...
