数学学院是四川大学历史最悠久的院系之一。1896年（光绪22年）四川总督鹿传霖奉旨创办四川中西学堂，确定“西学之要，首在算法”，所设算学馆即是数学学院的源头。算学馆当年招学生共三十名，专习算学。1901年，经洋务总局报呈四川总督审核，算学馆第一个毕业文凭发给学生周家彦。
