武汉体育学院健康科学学院原名运动心理与保健康复系，始建于1989年，是国内运动心理学、运动康复与健康本科专业的最早创办者之一，也是全国最早获得运动心理学、运动医学、运动人体科学硕士学位授予权的院系。学院现设心理学系和运动人体科学、特种医学、运动康复3个专业教研室。同时，拥有运动人体科学省级重点实验教学示范中心与运动训练监控省级重点实验室两个科研平台。

体育学院博士点是一级学科“社会学”下属的“体育社会学”二级学科博士点。体育社会学设置三个研究方向，分别为社区体育的组织与发展、重大体育社会问题研究、体育社会心理学，分别由田毅鹏教授、袁雷教授、杨杰教授作为学科带头人。本学科现有师资队伍总计15人，其中教授10位，副教授3位，拥有博士学位人员为11位，另外2位为在读博士。
