动物生态与保护生物学重点实验室具有悠久的历史，其前身是由著名动物生态学家寿振黄教授和夏武平教授在1962年创建的动物生态研究室。1994年由于生物多样性研究的迅猛发展，动物研究所成立了保护生物学研究室。1997年6月，根据学科发展和国家野生动物保护的战略需求，由动物生态研究室与保护生物学研究室合并为现在的动物生态与保护生物学重点实验室。实验室现任主任魏辅文研究员，学术委员会主任陈宜瑜院士。
